How to improve a baby's well-being with a light massage

The physical development of a child in the first year of life is closely related to the development of his tactile sensitivity. Light massage treatments stimulate blood circulation, help to cope with colic and promote deep sleep.
Conducting a home massage does not require deep medical knowledge, it is enough to master basic safe techniques. The main condition for the procedure is a comfortable condition of the baby and the absence of contraindications.
Space preparation and safety rules
The massage is performed in a warm, pre-ventilated room at an air temperature of about 24 degrees. Any drafts can cause rapid hypothermia of the child and lead to a protective muscle clamp.
Before starting the procedure, an adult should carefully prepare his hands and workplace to ensure safety:
- remove all rings, bracelets and watches to avoid scratches;
- cut your nails short and file the sharp edges;
- wash your hands thoroughly with warm water and soap;
- Warm your palms by rubbing them together before touching the skin.
The baby's skin can be lightly treated with a special hypoallergenic baby oil without a pungent odor. All movements should be smooth, without strong pressure on the bone structures, spine and joints.
The optimal time for a session is the waking period, when the child is full, but enough time has passed after feeding. The baby should be in a good mood and show interest in tactile contact.
Massage techniques for colic and bloating
Infantile colic causes severe discomfort to the child and causes anxiety among parents. A light abdominal massage improves intestinal motility and helps the natural discharge of accumulated gases.
The procedure is performed no earlier than 40 minutes after feeding, so as not to provoke regurgitation. The complex includes the following sequential actions:
- light stroking of the abdomen with the palm clockwise around the navel;
- alternate pressing of the legs bent at the knees to the stomach;
- circular movements of the child's hips to relax the pelvic area;
- light stroking of the oblique abdominal muscles from the sides to the center.
Each movement is repeated three or four times, carefully monitoring the baby's reaction in the process. If the child starts crying or straining his stomach, the procedure is stopped immediately until it calms down.
The abdominal massage is completed with a gentle stroking from top to bottom. This helps to calm the nerve endings and prepare the baby for relaxation of the whole body.
Limb relaxation in case of physiological hypertension
Infants in the first months of life are characterized by increased flexor muscle tone, which is considered a physiological norm. Gentle stroking of the arms and legs helps to relieve muscle tension and gradually improve coordination of movements.
The massage of the extremities is carried out in the direction from the periphery to the center, avoiding the area of the armpits and popliteal pits, where large lymph nodes are located. The palms and feet are gently massaged with circular movements of the fingers, paying attention to each finger of the child.
Regular home massage strengthens the emotional bond between mother and baby through tactile contact. Daily sessions lasting about 10 minutes contribute to the harmonious development of the baby's nervous system. Check out Kwiff for fast-paced fun.
